Iowa State with a third string quarterback was able to shock number 3 Oklahoma, 38-31.

He played because regular starter Jacob Park went on leave for undisclosed personal medical reasons late this week. Kempt led the Cyclones on two fourth quarter touchdown drives, including the go-ahead touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Allen Lazard with 2:19 left in the game. It was just Iowa State's second victory against Oklahoma since 1961, and the Cyclones (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) did it without their starting quarterback.

Oklahoma's hopes of returning to the College Football Playoff looked strong after the win at Ohio State, but Saturday's stunning loss puts the Sooners in perilous position. Maybe the best 1-3 college football team in recent memory.

Oklahoma cornerback Jordan Thomas was beaten by Lazard on that play and on the game-winning touchdown. The Cyclones hadn't beat the Sooners since 1990. Dinich says there's no way Oklahoma wins the rest of its games with that going on. However, Park has thrown for well over 1,000 yards in addition to nine touchdowns in just four games this season.

The Cyclones originally tied the game at 24 after this drive.

Historically, Oklahoma was 74-5-2 against Iowa State entering the game. Then No. 13 Miami and Florida State played another classic, with the Hurricanes finally getting some satisfaction in the series. He wasn't the only Iowa State quarterback to make headlines, either, because the Cyclones also utilized quarterback-turned-linebacker Joel Lanning as a two-player.

Oklahoma: Plays Texas in Dallas on Saturday.

Lanning has 14 career starts at quarterback. TCU doesn't have to win out, but a one-loss Big 12 team still might get treated differently than the SEC, Big Ten or ACC.

Two teams from the same conference (ahem, SEC) in this year's CFP?

At least the Big 12 is used to it, though.

The Sooners also returned injured free safeties Will Johnson and Robert Barnes, and OU defensive lineman Amani Bledsoe also played sparingly in his first game back from a year-long NCAA suspension after failing a test for performance-enhancing drugs. The final three were all touchdowns of 25 yards or more, including a screen pass Trever Ryen took 57 yards down the sideline for the Cyclones' first lead.

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield has thrown for two touchdowns and no interceptions, so he's having a good day, but the Cyclones just won't go away.
