Francesa: Girardi Was Among Yankees' Stars In Wild-Card Win”

On a day the Twins are to play the New York Yankees in tonight's postseason "play-in" game, he's thinking of a lost love in his letter to the Star Tribune.

Then the Yankees got their turn at bat.

The Yankees are hosting the Minnesota Twins Tuesday night in the winner-take-all American League wild-card game. The bullpen picked him up, however, tying the postseason strikeout record with 13 strikeouts in a nine-inning game, per ESPN Stats & Info. Unfortunately, Sevvy looked as bad as he did the last time he took the hill against the Twins back on September 20, when he allowed three runs and five hits in just three innings. Fortunately, that work has been done in the rankings below of all five home runs from that 8-4 Yankees win.

Same old song Tuesday night. The new, more corporate, $1.5 billion venue has always felt a little soulless. Joe Mauer is the only holdover on Minnesota's active roster from its previous playoff appearance seven years ago. The Yankees celebrated their way off the field and destroyed their clubhouse with gallons of champagne before packing their bags for Cleveland.

They seemed ready to further bury the past early on.

While Robertson was the pitcher of record, the Yankees scored three runs to take the lead, giving the right-hander his first postseason decision since 2012. Chad Green came on to strike out the next two batters and settle the collective stomach of Yankees fans. He is just terrible against the Twins. Since Aug. 6, Luis Severino has pitched in 11 games.

Postseason baseball has returned to the Bronx after a one-year absence. After the Indians went on a mind-blowing 22-game win streak, there was no chance that any team in the division was going to catch them.

Even Tommy Kahnle got in on the action, pitching like he did for the White Sox - really, really good. The one outlier in that stretch was a three-inning, three-run outing against Minnesota on September 20, when the 23-year-old was pulled following a 46-pitch third inning. Buxton was lifted in the fourth because of tightness in his back, which stiffened up when he beat out a potential double play for an RBI fielder's choice and then stole second base in the third. He hadn't entered a game before the sixth inning all year. Rosario hit a line-drive home run to right-field, stretching Minnesota's lead to 3-0.

Almost all of the pitchers were stretched beyond what they normally pitch and most relievers like to have an idea how many innings or outs they'll be tasked with giving the team.
