Patriots lose on final-play field goal, 33-30, to Panthers”

A promising matchup against New England could be exactly what the former MVP needs to finally get on track.

The New England Patriots look for their third victory of the season to build on their AFC East lead. The Panthers defense has lost a couple of crucial pieces to start, Josh Norman and defensive coordinator Sean McDermott have both since left the team.

This one's a little more hard because it depends on the strength of Newton's right shoulder.

The Panthers want to beat the defending Super Bowl champs at home in Foxborough. The Panthers allow the fewest yards per game in the league at 252. Panther quarterback Cam Newton has taken advantage of a soft Patriots defense thus far. The challenge for the Panthers will be trying to limit the Patriots offensively, something they are certainly capable of doing considering they have a strong defense.

Although Cam Newton has struggled so far, this season, the 2015 MVP victor has proven what he is capable of on the football field. "It is tough, especially with a scrambling quarterback and one of the best in Cam", he said. Matt Kalil, whom the Panthers brought in to protect Cam's blind side, has yet to handle such a job. They've got some good receivers. And what we thought was the strength of the team - their defense - just fell apart against Drew Brees.

Benjamin's left knee got bent backward after being dragged down from behind on the final play of the first quarter of Carolina's 34-13 loss to New Orleans on Sunday. Things got much worse, however. Panthers QB Cam Newton passed for 209 yards and three TDs in last meeting. I'm calling you on it. The Panthers have scored just 45 points through the first three weeks of the season, and everyone - from their head coach to their quarterback to the vendor in section 247 - knows it's just doesn't look right because it isn't right. But the second-year CB from Southern Cal, who came to Carolina via trade on roster cutdown day, could have his hands full vs. Chris Hogan and/or Brandin Cooks.

Adam Vinatieri's last-second field goal lifted the Patriots over the St. Louis Rams, who were Bradberry's favorite team after he'd latched on to the "Greatest Show on Turf" playmakers on the "NFL Blitz" video game. As an offensive line that's already struggling, they can not afford to have their best player missing. Rookie receiver Curtis Samuel will also miss the game due to a back injury. Veteran linebacker Julius Peppers was the only member of the Panthers to protest, remaining in the locker room during the anthem. They've won two consecutive games and seem poised to embark on another one of their patent streaks when they face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday (10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET, FOX, DirecTV).

The Patriots (2-1) are coming off a 36-33 win over the Houston Texans at home, falling short of covering as 13.5-point chalk, and they have also failed to cover four straight against the Panthers (2-1).
