Prominent leaders and journalists from across the country were anxious that the Lankesh's shooting at point-blank range was in retaliation to her anti-establishment voice.

It further said that Lankesh was a known critic of the Central Government on key issues and had fearlessly expressed her views in the newspaper she edited as well as in other forums.

"Gauri Lankesh was never afraid of speaking truth to power". Top police officer R.K. Dutta said he had met Lankesh recently, but that she did not mention any threat to her life.

G Parameshwara, KPCC president, said it is a great loss to the community of fearless and independent journalists. "The RSS and BJP ideology is trying to suppress the truth but this can not happen in India", he told reporters here.

Ministers belonging to India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have also openly attacked journalists, using terms like "presstitute" (a mix of press and prostitute) to describe them. Three bullets hit her in the head and chest, killing her instantly.

The assailants fled on a motorcycle after spraying bullets at Gauri Lankesh on Tuesday night as she was leaving her auto outside her home in the Karnataka state capital.

"Gauri Lankesh was shot dead outside her home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar here last evening", a senior police official told Xinhua.

New Home Minister of Karnataka Ramalinga Reddy rushed to the spot after the shooting and said, "Within minutes, seven rounds were fired at close range".

Calling PM Modi a skilled "Hindutva politician", Rahul said, "Sometimes, under pressure, the Prime Minister makes some statements". Gauri Lankesh, 55, was found dead outside her home late on Tuesday, 5 September.

Having started her career in Sunday Midday, she went on to work with Sunday magazine and later in The Times of India in Delhi and Bengaluru for many years. "Condolences to the family", Irani said in a tweet.

Gauri had been convicted by the court a year ago in a defamation case filed by BJP MP Prahlad Joshi.
