Roger Federer showed up to Central Park for practice”

In a match that looked every bit like two ailing men over 35 playing tennis, Federer won ugly over Mikhail Youzhny in the second round, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Federer has now won all 17 matches against Youzhny since the pair first faced off back in 2000.

Federer, with a 20th Grand Slam title in his sights, needed five sets to get past U.S. 19-year-old Frances Tiafoe in his opening match on Tuesday. Both Federer and Youzhny have had great US Open's in the past, with Youzhny twice a semifinalist and Federer five times a champion, but who will make the best of their 2017 campaign?

Tiafoe flashed his potential in a major way Tuesday night when he took Roger Federer to five sets in the first round of the U.S. Open.

There was no sign of the drama to come when Federer sprinted through the opener in just 25 minutes on the back of two breaks of serve on the Arthur Ashe court.

Leading 6-1 5-3 on the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Swiss nearly appeared too comfortable against an opponent he had never lost to in 16 previous meetings.

Federer emerged victorious, but Tiafoe took him to the brink of defeat in a 6-4, 2-6, 1-6, 6-1, 4-6 instant classic. "I didn't get the two-sets-to-love lead", said Federer. I knew I was going to maybe struggle early on, maybe I struggled more than I would have liked to.

Federer broke Youzhny again to take the fifth set 6-2, slamming an overhead on match point.

"I'm happy I managed to get through".

"It was hard to watch".

It played into Federer's hands, with the veteran Swiss able to regroup and level the match even though he was still well below his best.

Women's top seed Karolina Pliskova has advanced to the third round by rallying for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Nicole Gibbs.

In his only previous match against Federer, earlier this year in Miami, Tiafoe had pushed Federer to a first-set tiebreaker before losing in straight sets.

In terms of experience, he won't get much more than Mikhail Youzhny either, who he has been drawn to play in the second round.

"I was anxious in the beginning from my back issue from a couple weeks ago but I loosened up", Federer said, calling his back "extremely well" and adding "it's only going to get better from here". For another day, the dream of Federer facing Nadal in Queens for the first time remains alive. "Because I wasn't feeling it so much at some stage all of a sudden, it came through fighting".

It was the five-time champion's first match in NY since 2015 after he missed the tournament past year with knee problems.
