Dimuth Karunaratne scored 25 in first innings of second Test against India.

Karunaratne said Sri Lankan batsmen need to be positive to score runs on this pitch.

"I was disappointed because I have been away from the game so long and I didn't want to get out at all", he told reporters at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground.

Ashwin registered figures of 2/38. Herath had the last laugh when he clean bowled Ashwin off the very next ball, but that had already put Ashwin on a different pedestal in the list of top all-rounders. Cheteshwar Pujara at number 3 was rock solid becoming only the seventh Indian player and 36th overall to score a hundred in his 50th Test.

The left-hander smashed three sixes and four fours in an 85-ball stay to frustrate the Sri Lankan spinners, who had hurt the visitors' middle-order with regular strikes.

Ajinkya Rahane has revealed that India have made a conscious effort to attack the spinners on their tour of Sri Lanka, and in particular use their feet against Rangana Herath, the prime threat.

It also began Lanka's collapse as they lost their last 6 wickets for 66 runs in 15.4 overs.

Even so, Pujara (overnight 128) couldn't take advantage of this situation as Karunaratne (1-31) trapped him lbw in the second over of the day.

The on-field umpire however, did not budge and the home side immediately asked for a referral which got them the prized wicket. India were 442/5 at lunch, well placed to take a stranglehold of the Test.

Malinda Pushpakumara (2-156) also had a maiden Test scalp when he deceived Rahane, who was stumped to end a 222-ball knock which yielded 14 boundaries. Cheteswar Pujara is gone 133 and the score is 350/4. Jadeja remained unbeaten on 70 while Saha (67) and Ashwin (54) were the other batsmen who enjoyed the run-fest on the second day.

Realising the futility of trying to hang around, Dickwella threw his bat at everything, hitting seven boundaries and a six before attempting an ugly scoop against Shami that deflected the ball onto his stumps. Hardik Pandya slammed a run-a-ball 20 before holing out to the deep and Jadeja too made some quick runs, while Saha quietly went past his fifty, paddling and guiding the spinners for hard-worked runs. Because the same thinking was in Melbourne [in December 2014] in Australia, wanted to dominate them and that's what we did.
