Washington Redskins president releases statement after contract negotiations fail with Kirk Cousins”

He denied speculation that he won't sign a long-term deal because of the presence of club president Bruce Allen, but the Redskins apparently were not inclined to commit to a deal that would pay him over $25 million a season with significant guarantees. However, the 49ers are expected to once again be among the teams with the most available salary cap space next year.

"Despite our repeated attempts, we have not received any offer from Kirk's agent this year", Allen said.

With his performances the last two years as a starter, Kirk Cousins has proved himself worthy of a long-term contract.

If that does happen and Washington lets Cousins hit free agency, they could still land him back by just beating his best contract offer.

This should surprise nobody, but the disaster that is the Redskins front office has bungled the handling of QB Kirk Cousins, and he's nearly certainly a goner next offseason.

The Washington Redskins were not convinced about Cousins' ability to keep the strong play going entering last season.

For the second consecutive season, Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins will play under the franchise tag. While NFL players often don't like dealing with the lack of security that comes with a one-year deal, it may benefit Cousins no matter what.

Coincidentally enough, Bell and Cousins were teammates at Michigan State for two seasons. Whether he is or not, I don't know - but similar attributes.

The Redskins will have to wait until next year's offseason before they can resume negotiations on a multiyear contract for Cousins.

The transition tag would allow the Redskins to match any offer but would not give them any compensation if he left.

"We are looking at an unprecedented situation", Schefter said. "I would express that".

Another deadline has passed in the Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins saga.

Apparently, this is not the first time Allen has been perceived to be calling Cousins "Kurt". Neither of those options seem particularly appealing, but after a weird day, Washington doesn't appear to have an appealing long-term future at quarterback, either. This time, the second extension deadline for Cousins has expired, and he will be forced to play yet another season on the franchise tag. The new five-year contract offer also had an average that was still well short of Cousins' existing franchise tag price of $23,942,600, per Pelissero.
