Canadian Grand Prix: Hamilton cruises to sixth win in Montreal”

While getting past Vettel, Verstappen clipped the Ferrari's front wing, severely damaging it and causing Vettel to pit once the safety vehicle from the turn 3 incident with Grosjean, Sainz and Massa had come in.

TV replays showed that the fast-starting Verstappen, who later retired with technical gremlins, had nicked the nose of the Ferrari at Turn One, but the stewards took no action. Under pressure from Sergio Pérez throughout and latterly Esteban Ocon and Sebastian Vettel, Ricciardo drove a faultless race to keep his rivals behind him and take a third consecutive third place in 2017.

His veteran teammate Felipe Massa was seventh in qualifying. Vettel's lead over Hamilton was cut to 12 points as a result of the Canadian race - 141-129.

"Our first one-two as the team [in 2017] is a really proud moment for us".

"I've got the stamp, I posted it the other day", he said, before a prod from Vettel at his side made him see the unintended pun. Bottas in second gave Mercedes their first 1-2 finish of the season and Stroll took points for Williams, finishing P9 at his home Grand Prix.

Vettel had a mishap on turn two on his final fast lap or he may have had a chance to nip Hamilton for the pole. The Dutch driver clipped Vettel's right front wing and he subsequently also suffered from a damaged floor.

The incident ended both their days and brought out the safety auto.

At the restart, Verstappen's punchy mood continued, moving alongside Hamilton as he entered the final chicane at the restart, but that put him out of position for the main straight and instead he held off Bottas at Turn 1.

The three-time champion cruised home around 20 seconds ahead of his team-mate Valtteri Bottas as the Mercedes team bounced back from their desultory showing at last month's Monaco Grand Prix with their first one-two this year. Shortly after, Haas' Magnussen was given a five second penalty for overtaking under the VSC.

The German would eventually battle his way back to fourth place, dramatically passing both Force India cars in the closing laps.

Ocon appeared quicker than Perez but at no point was able to get by him for position in an effort to hunt down Ricciardo for third.

"After the last race, we know now where to develop this vehicle moving forward, which is going to make such a difference in winning this championship". For many of you, Ayrton was your favourite driver. Raikkonen had brake problems towards the end. That left Ocon out of position and Vettel soon got alongside the Frenchman, with the pair almost colliding as they approached Turn 1. The Russian then had a slow stop while serving it and was forced out a lap later. Every single lap I was on DRS to Ricciardo.

Perez was obviously having issues getting by Ricciardo, as he had been for most of the race thus far, and was facing severe pressure from his teammate behind.

While all the late drama was unfolding, Alonso pulled up, complaining simply "engine, engine". Marcus Ericsson, Stoffel Vandoorne and Pascal Wehrlein filled positions 13 through to 15. Kvyat stalled on the grid before the formation lap and then failed to go to the back before the start.
