Cavs' Best Effort Not Good Enough To Beat The Warriors

The feeling is they just have to get the ball rolling in their direction. That year, the Thunder were a number one seed in the playoffs with their sight set on beating the Miami Heat, who had beat them 4-1 in the finals.

The Warriors trailed by six with three minutes left before Durant, criticized for leaving Oklahoma City last summer to chase a championship, brought them back, scoring 14 in the fourth. They were behind by three points, and then ran a unusual inbounds play leading to LeBron James taking an off-balanced, fall-away 3-pointer from the corner.

Everything they wanted. Pace, physical nature, venue, support. Win this game, and suddenly it's a series they know they can win.

"All I was looking at was the bottom of the net", Durant told ABC's Doris Burke.

"Always hard no matter what happens in the first two games", he said of Game 3s.

Thompson is 4-for-11 shooting with 11 rebounds for the series.

Klay Thompson parlayed his huge Game 2 into a bigger Game 3, nailing six of the Warriors' 16 3s and hitting 30 points for the first time in this postseason.

Point guard Kyrie Irving was -9 though, but he did provide 38 points and 6 assists. Stephen Curry got an uncontested driving layup.

Durant, often matched up with James, finished the first quarter with eight points to James' 16.

Curry and Durant knocked down two free throws each as the Cavaliers failed to intentionally foul the Warriors' worse shooters, and the game was down.

Alex chimed in and said, "I love Kyrie's crossover". "It always starts on the defensive side with us". We got to this point playing our way.

"Like I said, tonight our guys felt, I felt we had a game that we had won that we let slip away", Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue sid. "But glad I was able to knock that down". "It wasn't our smartest game that we have played all year, but it was maybe our toughest in terms of our ability to just hang in there". "I gave everything that I had, so at times throughout the game I was exhausted, but that's just because I was just playing as hard as I could". Me personally I gave everything I have.

But they also played nearly the entire second half together (Irving never sat and LeBron did for only 34 seconds), making it more likely they'd fade down the stretch. "KD comes down, hits a big 3, puts them up one, iso on the wing". "I mean, just hits an unbelievable game victor, just comes down in transition, that only Kevin Durant can hit". "For example try not to throw the ball to LeBron early in the game and let him dunk with 20,000 people going insane".

That ended Cleveland's hopes - and all but certainly ensured the Warriors will be crowned National Basketball Association champions in the coming days.

It seemed James and Irving were running on empty. There have been reports that one other team is interested in hiring Griffin away from Cleveland, so Cavs owner Dan Gilbert's reluctance to allow Griffin to take interviews could mean he intends to re-sign him. The three-time champion stopped driving to the basket in the second half of Game 2 and he looked spent on the bench when he took a break during the third quarter. Whatever the Warriors would gain from one or two nights of basketball pales in comparison to the long term benefits of sweeping the Finals and submitting a claim to the title of greatest team of all time. But appearances can be so deceiving.
