Apple will compete with Google Home and Amazon Echo later this year with a new speaker called HomePod.

Onstage, Apple's worldwide head of marketing, Phil Schiller, described how the speaker analyzes the song it's playing and adjusts its output.

The speaker will sell for about $350 in December in the U.S., Britain and Australia.

It can also be used to control other devices in the home, and reportedly will be in competition against Amazon's Echo and Google Home. HomePod owners will only be able to stream music from Apple Music, and will not be able to use a third party service such as Spotify as an alternative. It includes an array of six microphones (Amazon Echo packs seven whereas Google Home includes just two), so users can interact with it from across the room, even while loud music is playing.

Siri will add inflection to her voice, to say phrases three different ways.

Apple said it is also using "on-device learning" to enable Siri to take people's tastes into account.

The HomePod is expected to go on sale in December at $349.
